Hello all. I have been trying to spend more time on the weekends exploring some of the natural wonders of the bay area, and even some of the most unnatural but equally beautiful ones. Yesterday was Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in HMB, today was the GG Bridge and Land's End area. I have put some photos on my profile, if you are interested.
Curious, however, about some of your favorite places to visit casually to reconnect with nature. Care to share?

Re: Out and About - Small Treasures in the Bay Area
Mon, January 22, 2007 - 1:25 AMIf you ever get a chance to make it out to Livermore check out Mines Road which heads South out of Livermore. About 60 something miles later you will find yourself on top of Mt. Hamilton near San Jose. The scenery is amazing and relatively untouched when you are about 10 miles out of Livermore. -

Mon, January 22, 2007 - 8:57 AMOr if you turn left at The Junction, you'll end up in Paterson. Either way it's a great drive. -

Mon, January 22, 2007 - 9:05 AMI have actually never been out there. For some reason I always gravitate towards water - the ocean, streams, rivers, etc.

Mon, January 22, 2007 - 2:49 PMOr if you take Tessla road South out of Livermore you pass by the Lawrence Livermore Explosives test range, which is always an interesting place to see, along with one hell of a fun road to drive. :-)

Re: Out and About - Small Treasures in the Bay Area...and beyond

My favorite places to hike are on the backside of Mt Diablo that can be reached off of the Marsh Creek Road to the Morgan Territory Regional Reserve and offers many hiking trails and hidden water falls that can be viewed during the winter months.
Plus...the old TV series and movie of "Grizzly Adams" will surprise many...for its hard to believe that the legendary John "Grizzly" Adams would hunt elk, deer, mountain lion, and bears right here in the San Francisco Bay area in 1854-55. It is said that he set up his base camp at the edge of Alameda county on Corral Hollow Road in Livermore. The history of Mt Diablo can be found at this website www.cocohistory.com/essays-grizadams.html
Another place to explore is the Black Diamond Mines at the south end of Somersville Rd in Antioch, where the township of Nortonville once thrived. The hills and valleys were was once populated with Native Americans until coal was discovered in the 1860s at this parcel of land just south of Pittsburg. It's an
excellent place to visit, if you're into exploring caves, love hiking, are into the history of ghost towns, into Geology or Archaeology. SEE www.bahiker.com/eastbayhikes/bdm.html
I would love to find other areas to hike and visit...so don't be bashful

Mon, January 22, 2007 - 4:15 PMThank you for sharing that Sarah. I've been meaning to get out and discover more of SF since moving here 2 months ago. You've wetted my appetite now.
What web sites would you guys out there recommend that give details of hikes within SF. -

Re: Out and About - Small Treasures in the Bay Area
Tue, January 23, 2007 - 8:49 AMMy favourite is the Albany Bulb, just north of Berkeley (off the Buchanan Exit, turn towards the racetrack/bay). It's an ex-commercial landfill (construction debris) that's been reclaimed as an art space. LOTS of fabulous things if you poke around, there's a "castle", and great views of the Golden Gate bridge.
Not often a lot of people there, so it's my favourite place to go on afternoons, and just sit on a rock and stare at the bay and listen to the water hit the rocks.
There's also a gorgeous (dog-friendly) beach. -

Mon, January 7, 2008 - 9:29 PMalbany bukb is the shiznit.
i also love me some tilden park
wildcat canyon trail is awesome. there another way to jump into it froma lil picnic area called " the nook" and i swear that the faeries go there.
theres also some caves along that trail, theyre actually below the parking lot of lake anza (where you can swim) and the trail will also take you to lake anza eventually. i have climbed in these caves and its cool. there are indentations in the walls that seem almost made for tea lights.
beware of winter and rainy seasons because the trails become mush and rarely get sun;ight to dry them.still such a heaven;y place to hike.
:)
also enjoy codornices park and the berkeley rose gardens up on euclid st/ave? on the other side of the cal campus. there is a tunnel between the rose gardens and codornices park. daytime is ok, but lots of kids in the park and a big ass cement slide!!! bring cardboard! i prefer the night time, esp on a full moonlit night. night time is definitely doobie friendly and fun to spook yourself out going thru the tunnel between the park and rose gardens. surprisingly stargaze and meteor shower friendly.
