Where should we go camping Labor Day weekend?

the two of us want to go car camping somewhere not too far away, hopefully near a river, lake, or beach, somewhere not too crowded (yeah right, on Labor Day!), where should we go?

I'm a big fan of Salt Point, about 2 hours north of the city on Hhy 1, between Jenner and Gualala . Beautiful forested area with beach/cliffs on one side and mountain hikes on the other. Never been there Labor Day, but I've never seen it very crowded at all. And there's a great walk-in camping sight up from the road.

We're from the Bay Area, specifically the Peninsula.

Head down south towards Santa Cruz, there's a great park there you can hit from Hwy 1, drive up, find a spot. I always want to call the place Big Sur, but that isn't it, that one is farther south, but it's something like that. You know the place I'm sure, the wind surfers are always at the beach there at the entrance to the park.

I've never been there when it's been crowded.....it's always been quiet and nice.

Yes, yes, Wilder Ranch, that's it.

Shasta is VERY low right now too. Makes for launching boats a bit tricky, haha, but changes the views dramatically!!!!!!!! I was just there over the last couple of weekends, beautiful, but crowded right AT the lake area. There is so much to explore there however, you're going to have a great trip!

Hmm, real hiking? or just a pretty cool walk about?

There are some very nice hiking trails just off Hwy 35, in the hills above Half Moon Bay.......My favorite when we lived there was Purisima Creek Redwoods open space, it's accessed from Skyline Blvd (hwy 35) from a tiny parking lot on the side of the road, but you can see it easily.

The air is cooler under those nice, big trees and the trails very nice, a pretty long hike if you like or short ones if you don't like.

I don't know if that map link will work, but you can pull it up on google and just zoom in too, that works :)

Now we've got to figure something out for us. We are thinking day trips, one of which is to the old town of Locke, CA. They have a Chinese restaurant there that is reported to be amazing and the whole town was built by people from China, back in the days when the levees were being built along the Sacramento River. Pretty teeny town, but a slowly vanishing piece of our state history that is worth the trip........hmmm, but that only takes care of one day, what about the rest? Haha
